BOLOGNA: Italy secured a historic third straight Davis Cup triumph on Sunday as Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli won their singles matches to defeat Spain 2-0 in the best-of-three tie.

The victory, celebrated by a raucous home crowd, marked Italy’s fourth Davis Cup crown overall, following wins in 1976, 2023, and 2024. This feat also made Italy the first nation to win three consecutive Davis Cup titles since the Challenge Round ended in 1971.

Berrettini set the tone with a commanding performance in the opener, defeating Pablo Carreno Busta 6-3, 6-4. The 29-year-old Italian, ranked 56th in the world, fired 13 aces and 21 winners, extending his Davis Cup singles winning streak to 11 matches. “The team is big, we’re guys who love each other, a big team. And now come on Flavio, go for it,” Berrettini said after his win.

Cobolli then produced a dramatic comeback against Jaume Munar, who had taken a 5-0 lead in the first set. The 23-year-old Italian battled back to claim the second set in a 7-6(5) tiebreak and ultimately closed out the third set 7-5.

Ranked 22nd globally, Cobolli’s spirited performance ignited celebrations as teammates embraced him on court. “It’s impossible to describe this feeling,” Cobolli said. “I dreamed a lot for this night… I don’t know where I am. The only thing I know is that I’m world champion.”

Both teams were missing key players, with Spain without Carlos Alcaraz and Italy without Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti. Despite these absences, Berrettini and Cobolli rose to the occasion, highlighting Italy’s depth and team spirit. Their victories underline Italy’s dominance in men’s team tennis and cement the squad’s place in Davis Cup history.
