Iran condemns US tanker attacks near Hormuz

Published on: May 8, 2026 8:12 PM

Iran has strongly condemned reported US attacks on two oil tankers near the port of Jask and the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian Foreign Ministry said the incidents occurred late on May 7 and early May 8, and described them as violations of an existing ceasefire understanding. Tehran also said its armed forces responded to the attacks.

In its statement, Iran accused the United States of escalating tensions in the strategic waterway. It said the strikes also targeted coastal areas near the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy route. The ministry warned that continued hostilities could further destabilize the region.

Iran claimed the actions violate the March 8 ceasefire agreement and breach the United Nations Charter. It also criticized recent US statements, saying they contribute to rising regional instability. Tehran said it remains committed to defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry called on the United Nations Security Council and the UN Secretary-General to intervene. It urged international bodies to take steps to preserve peace and prevent further escalation. Iran also called for a regional security framework without external interference.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a key flashpoint amid ongoing tensions involving maritime security and energy transport. The latest exchange of accusations adds pressure to already fragile diplomatic efforts in the region.
