Kim visits missile factory, issues directive

Published on: June 9, 2026 12:11 AM

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has ordered an increase in missile production during a visit to a weapons manufacturing facility. The directive reflects Pyongyang’s efforts to strengthen its military capabilities amid evolving security challenges. The move is expected to draw attention from regional powers and international observers.

According to state media, Kim visited a missile factory on Saturday and reviewed production activities. He emphasized the need to expand output in line with the changing operational requirements of the North Korean military. Officials said the leadership considers missile development a key component of the country’s defense strategy.

Images released by state media showed Kim inspecting dozens of Hwasong-11 short-range ballistic missiles. North Korea has previously claimed that these missiles can carry nuclear warheads. The weapons are also capable of targeting locations in South Korea and US military facilities in the region, according to official statements.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that North Korea has continued diversifying the capabilities of the Hwasong-11 missile series. Recent developments reportedly include variants equipped with cluster munitions, fragmentation warheads, and blackout bomb technologies. These efforts form part of Pyongyang’s broader push to modernize its missile arsenal.

State media also suggested that missile exports remain an important source of foreign currency for North Korea. Reports claimed that Hwasong-11A and Hwasong-11B missiles supplied to Russia have been used in the conflict in Ukraine. Analysts say the latest production order highlights North Korea’s determination to expand both its military capacity and strategic influence.
