Police face contempt charges for filming dance party arrests in Lahore

Published on: April 14, 2025 5:33 PM

The Lahore High Court issued contempt of court notices to police officials involved in the arrest of suspects at a dance party in Kasur. Justice Ali Zia Bajwa called the police’s actions unacceptable in any society. Additionally, Punjab Prosecutor General Syed Farhad Ali Shah requested a ban on police using TikTok.

The case arose when Wishal Shakir’s lawyer, Mian Ali Haider, highlighted that the court had previously prohibited making videos of detained suspects. Shakir’s plea prompted the court to consider proceedings against high-ranking officials in Kasur for violating this order.

During the hearing, Justice Bajwa questioned the District Police Officer (DPO) about the viral footage. He asked how the police personnel felt justified in pulling a girl’s hair for the TikTok video. The DPO admitted the incident was unfortunate and stated that the responsible officers had been dismissed.

Justice Bajwa expressed his concerns about preventing similar incidents in the future. The DPO assured him that swift action had been taken and such events would not occur again. In light of this, the judge directed the station house officer not to attend the next court date, asking instead for the superintendent of police to be present.
