Special cybercrime team launched to fight hate speech on social media during Muharram

Published on: June 27, 2025 3:42 PM

ISLAMABAD — The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has formed a special team to crack down on hate speech, misinformation, and incitement on social media during the sacred month of Muharram. This move comes under the directives of the Ministry of Interior to ensure peace and harmony throughout the religious observances.

The newly created team includes technical experts, digital analysts, and officers who will closely monitor social media platforms for any content that spreads religious hatred or incites violence. The NCCIA has declared that preventing such harmful activities during Muharram is a top priority, and strict legal action will be taken against those found responsible.

After multiple moon-sighting reports from across Pakistan, the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee confirmed that Muharram 1447 will begin soon, with Ashura falling on July 6 (Sunday). Muharram is one of the four sacred Islamic months, and Ashura marks the day Imam Hussain (RA), the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) grandson, was martyred in Karbala.

Faithful across Pakistan prepare for processions and majalis with heightened security, as thousands of law enforcement personnel have been deployed to maintain peace. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi chaired a meeting to review Muharram’s security plans, including possible suspension of mobile and internet services if deemed necessary in consultation with provincial authorities.

Minister Naqvi emphasized that the federal government will provide full support to keep peace and order during Muharram. He warned that no individual would be allowed to provoke unrest or disrupt the solemn religious events. Advanced technology will be used to monitor gatherings and processions, ensuring compliance with the code of conduct.

The Ministry also vowed to take coordinated action against anyone spreading hate or inciting violence on social media during the month. This strong stance aims to safeguard the country’s religious harmony and prevent any incidents of unrest during this sensitive time.g
