ECP finalizes reserved seats in KP assembly

Published on: July 15, 2025 6:09 PM

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has issued a key ruling on the distribution of reserved seats in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly. This decision came after Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) filed a petition challenging the initial seat allocation. After reviewing arguments from five political parties and 21 candidates, the ECP approved PML-N’s request, clarifying the final seat distribution. This ruling resolves ongoing confusion about the reserved seats following the provincial elections.

According to the ECP’s decision, PML-N and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) will compete for one minority reserved seat through a draw (toss). The remaining reserved seats are divided among parties with PML-N and JUI-F each receiving nine seats. Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) will hold five seats, while Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Parliamentarians (PTI-P) and Awami National Party (ANP) will each gain one seat. This distribution reflects the relative strength of each party in the assembly.

In addition, PML-N secured a reserved women’s seat in the assembly. However, one women’s reserved seat will be decided by a toss between ANP and PTI-P. The Election Commission’s five-member bench, led by Chief Election Commissioner, carefully examined key issues such as how the reserved seats were counted, the official notification dates, and deadlines for party membership. This thorough process ensured a fair and transparent decision.

The parties presented strong arguments, focusing on technical points like notification timelines and party alliances. The hearing lasted several hours, allowing each party to explain why they deserved specific reserved seats. The decision brings clarity to the political landscape in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and strengthens the province’s democratic process by confirming the rightful representatives.

In summary, the Election Commission’s decision settles disputes over reserved seats in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s assembly. It ensures fair representation of all parties based on election results. This final seat allocation allows the provincial assembly to move forward with a clear and balanced political setup, boosting stability and governance in the region.
