In a tragic incident in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, a Bangladesh Air Force training aircraft crashed into a college canteen, killing one person and injuring more than 100 others, according to local media reports.
As reported by The Daily Star, the F-7 BGI jet crashed inside Milestone College in the Uttara area of Dhaka. The plane belonged to the Bangladesh Air Force and went down shortly after takeoff. The crash site, a college canteen, was crowded with students and staff at the time.
According to Reuters, the military’s public relations department confirmed the incident and stated that the jet had taken off at 1:06 PM local time (0706 GMT). A spokesperson said the exact number of casualties is still being determined.
Doctors at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery confirmed that over 50 individuals, including children, were rushed to the hospital with burn injuries. Some are reported to be in critical condition.
Bangladesh’s interim government head, Mohammad Yunus, expressed deep sorrow over the incident. He assured that a full investigation would be launched and all necessary assistance would be provided to the victims and their families. “The loss suffered by the Air Force, students, parents, teachers, and staff is irreparable,” he added.
Videos captured moments after the crash show thick black smoke rising from a field near the college, with flames visible and bystanders watching from a distance. Initial reports from local outlet Prothom Alo suggest the jet hit the canteen’s roof, though Reuters has not independently verified this detail.
The tragedy comes just over a month after a deadly plane crash in Ahmedabad, India, where an Air India jet crashed into a medical college hostel, killing 241 out of 242 people on board, along with 19 on the ground—marking one of the deadliest aviation disasters in the past decade.
