American eagle defends Sydney Sweeney amid ad backlash

Published on: August 2, 2025 11:00 AM

American Eagle has responded to the backlash over its recent ad campaign featuring actress Sydney Sweeney, strongly denying claims that it promotes racial messaging or eugenics. The brand emphasized that the slogan “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans” is simply a creative way to highlight the denim line and the actress’s personal style.

The controversy began when critics pointed out that the phrase “great jeans” sounded like “great genes,” which some linked to Sydney’s European background. A report by Salon further argued that the phrase has historically been used to promote whiteness and traditional beauty standards. Many online users accused the brand of being tone-deaf and even promoting harmful ideologies.

In response, American Eagle broke its silence by releasing a statement on Instagram on August 1. “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story,” the post read. The brand added that their goal is to show how everyone wears American Eagle jeans with confidence and individuality.

Despite the company’s clarification, one specific ad video intensified the backlash. It showed Sweeney lying down to zip up her jeans while saying, “Genes are passed down from parents… My jeans are blue.” A narrator then echoed, “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans,” which critics interpreted as a reference to eugenics.

The online reaction quickly escalated, with some users drawing extreme comparisons to Nazi propaganda and calling the ad “deeply irresponsible.” While some defended the brand’s creative freedom, others felt American Eagle should have anticipated the slogan’s controversial interpretation.

As the debate continues, American Eagle stands firmly by its campaign and Sydney Sweeney. The brand maintains that the message is solely focused on self-expression through fashion and has no hidden racial or political agenda.
