Shubman Gill named India’s new ODI captain, replacing Rohit Sharma

Published on: October 4, 2025 3:52 PM

India’s cricket board announced on Saturday that Shubman Gill will replace Rohit Sharma as the ODI captain. Gill, 26, takes charge starting with the upcoming series in Australia, beginning October 19. Rohit Sharma, 38, and Virat Kohli, 36, remain part of the ODI squad despite stepping down from captaincy and retiring from T20Is and Tests. Shubman Gill is now captain of both the Test and ODI teams, and vice-captain of the T20 side.

Gill earned praise for his leadership during the summer Test series in England, where he scored 754 runs in five matches. His efforts helped India draw the series 2-2 against tough competition. Besides international cricket, Gill leads the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League. His leadership style has been commended for its calm and strategic approach. Shubman Gill’s new role reflects the team’s trust in his abilities.

Rohit Sharma is one of India’s most successful limited-overs captains, having led the team to their third Champions Trophy title earlier this year. Although he has stepped down as captain, he continues to play in the ODI squad. Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer will serve as Gill’s vice-captain for the Australia series. This leadership transition marks a new era for Indian cricket.

India currently holds the top spot in both ODI and T20 rankings by the International Cricket Council. The team will play three ODIs followed by five T20 internationals in Australia. Notably, wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant is recovering from a fractured foot and is excluded from the tour. The squad features a mix of experienced players and promising youngsters.

The ODI squad includes Shubman Gill (captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer (vice-captain), and KL Rahul as wicketkeeper. The T20 squad is led by Suryakumar Yadav, with Gill as vice-captain. Both squads aim to continue India’s strong international performance. Fans eagerly await the upcoming matches to see the new leadership in action.
