TENNESSEE, USA – At least 18 people are missing and feared dead after a powerful explosion destroyed a munitions factory in rural Tennessee on Friday, sending shockwaves that were felt miles away. The blast occurred at Accurate Energetic Systems (AES), located about 60 miles (100 km) west of Nashville, and obliterated the building, leaving behind only scattered debris and flames.

Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis described the aftermath as “one of the most devastating situations that I’ve been on in my career.” He said it could take considerable time to determine both the cause of the explosion and the exact death toll. “There’s not going to be a short explanation for that,” Davis told reporters, confirming that investigators from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) were already on-site. When asked about the structure itself, Davis said bluntly, “There’s nothing to describe. It’s gone.”

Aerial footage broadcast by WTVF-TV showed smoke and fire rising from a massive pile of rubble, while witnesses said the explosion was heard and felt for miles. Davis initially reported 19 people missing, but local station WSMV-TV later confirmed that one person had been found safe at home, reducing the count to 18 missing.

In a brief statement, Accurate Energetic Systems expressed condolences to affected families and thanked emergency crews, saying: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, coworkers, and community members affected by this incident.” According to its website, AES develops and manufactures explosives for military, aerospace, and commercial demolition markets. Its 1,300-acre headquarters in Bucksnort houses eight production buildings and a testing lab.

Local officials said the company provided well-paying jobs in a region where minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. AES had recently advertised for production workers starting at $19 per hour. Hickman County Mayor Jim Bates told CNN the plant had no significant safety violations in recent years, though a 2014 explosion at the same facility killed one person and injured three others. Authorities have sealed off the area, and an official investigation into the cause of the explosion is now underway.
