Punjab to finalise LG elections framework by Jan 10

Published on: November 1, 2025 1:20 AM

Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman on Friday said, Punjab government is fully committed to conducting local government elections and will finalize all necessary requirements including certified maps and delimitation rules by January 10, 2026, enabling the Election Commission to begin the constituency delimitation process.

During a high-level meeting on Punjab’s local government polls, chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, the Punjab chief secretary reiterated the provincial government’s dedication to holding local elections. The session, convened by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), focused on preparations and timelines for the upcoming polls, with officials emphasizing their resolve to ensure a transparent and timely electoral process, according to a press release.

He stated that the draft delimitation rules, formulated under the Punjab Local Government Act 2025, have been officially submitted to the ECP. The chief election commissioner (CEC) instructed the office to promptly submit its feedback on the draft rules to the Punjab provincial government.

The chief secretary informed that the draft Local Government Conduct of Election Rules will be submitted to the ECP by November 15, 2025, for review and input.

He further stated that the provincial government will provide the ECP with the demarcation notification, along with classification notifications for Town Corporations, Municipal Corporations, Municipal Committees, and Tehsil Councils by December 22, 2025.

The Punjab CS said that official notifications detailing the number of Union Councils will be submitted to the ECP by December 31. Additionally, certified maps for all Town Corporations, Municipal Corporations, Municipal Committees, and Tehsil Councils will be provided by January 10, 2026. Once these documents are received, the ECP will initiate the delimitation process.

Following the briefing by the Punjab chief secretary, the ECP underscored that all outlined tasks must be executed strictly in accordance with the proposed timeline.

The chief election commissioner told representatives of the Punjab government that holding local government elections in Punjab is a shared responsibility between the provincial government and the Election Commission of Pakistan.

He urged the Punjab government to fulfill its role by providing the required rules, data, notifications, and maps so the ECP can take timely steps for delimitation and discharge its constitutional and legal duties.

The meeting was attended by members, the secretary of the ECP, the Punjab chief secretary, the secretary of Local Government Punjab, and other senior officials from both the Election Commission of Pakistan and the Punjab government.
