Google Maps adds AI Gemini for smarter driving and navigation

Published on: November 6, 2025 12:51 PM

Google has upgraded its Maps app with new AI-powered features using Gemini, allowing drivers to interact with an AI bot for improved navigation and real-time assistance. Users can now ask Gemini questions about points of interest, traffic, news, sports, or even schedule events while driving. The AI can handle multiple queries in a single conversation, such as finding nearby restaurants and checking parking availability.

The update also lets drivers report traffic incidents, with Maps proactively notifying users of disruptions along their route. A new feature combines Gemini with Street View data to offer landmark-based directions, replacing generic cues like “turn right after 500 feet” with instructions based on visible landmarks such as gas stations, restaurants, or famous buildings. Gemini cross-references information about 250 million locations with Street View images to enhance navigation accuracy.

Additionally, Google Lens integration allows users to point their cameras at landmarks or establishments to ask questions like, “What is this place and why is it popular?” This feature provides contextual information to enhance discovery while exploring new areas.

The AI navigation features are rolling out gradually to iOS and Android devices, with Android Auto support expected soon. Landmark-based navigation is currently available in the U.S., and Lens with Gemini will become functional in the U.S. later this month.
