Mamdani confronts Trump over US role in Gaza conflict

Published on: November 22, 2025 12:54 PM

US President Donald Trump welcomed New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani to the White House on Friday. The 34-year-old democratic socialist was praised for his election victory despite months of mutual attacks during the campaign.

The meeting, described as unexpectedly warm, did not erase deep political differences. Mamdani reiterated his accusation that Israel is “committing genocide” in Gaza and claimed US taxpayer dollars fund it, a point previously dismissed by Trump. The president responded only that both share a commitment to Middle East peace and disarming Hamas.

Trump congratulated Mamdani for running “an incredible race” and noted they agreed on more issues than expected, especially affordability concerns affecting New Yorkers. Mamdani called the meeting “productive,” focusing on housing, public safety, and rising costs.

During the briefing, Trump defended Mamdani against accusations of extremism from Rep. Elise Stefanik and joked about Mamdani’s earlier labeling of him as a “fascist.” Mamdani emphasized his commitment to Jewish safety and condemned using houses of worship for political protests.

Questions over federal funding to New York remain unresolved. The city is projected to receive $7.4 billion in fiscal year 2026, though Trump previously threatened cuts. Despite tensions, both leaders pledged to work on affordability and city welfare.
