Elizabeth Olsen says she feels ‘too distant’ for modern romcom roles

Published on: November 27, 2025 2:57 PM

Elizabeth Olsen explains the reason behind doing Eternity

Elizabeth Olsen, best known for her portrayal of Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has made an unexpected revelation about her hesitancy toward acting in contemporary romantic comedies. The actress recently starred in the new romantic comedy Eternity, where she plays a 90-year-old woman living inside the body of a 30-year-old.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Olsen admitted that she does not feel suited for modern romantic roles, saying she struggles to connect with today’s pop culture. The 36-year-old actress explained that she finds it difficult to portray characters who embody the current cultural moment due to feeling “distant” from it.

Elizabeth Olsen tells us why she thinks her new movie ‘ETERNITY’ is relevant to modern times.

The rom-com follows a reality where everyone must decide who they want to spend eternity with.

“This might sound silly, but being 36 years old, I can’t really imagine myself doing a romantic comedy as someone in the modern world,” Olsen confessed. “I don’t really feel like I know how to capture pop culture of this moment, because I’m so distant from it.”

Despite this reluctance, Olsen said she chose to do Eternity because the role felt uniquely tailored to her. Playing a woman whose soul is 90 years old allowed her to approach the romantic comedy genre from a completely different perspective — one she believes she may never get again.

“But I felt like I could do this romantic comedy as a 90-year-old [in a 30-something woman’s body], and it felt like an opportunity that I wouldn’t have again,” she shared. “It’s something that feels unique to how I feel in some ways.”

Directed by David Freyne, Eternity explores a fantastical afterlife where souls have one week to decide where they will spend eternity. Olsen plays Joan, a woman torn between the love of her long life and her first love, who passed away at a young age — a dilemma that drives the emotional core of the story.
