Director Chris Columbus, who helmed the original Home Alone and its sequel Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, has now spoken candidly about why the series went downhill. He believes the decline began once the original creative team stepped away.

Home Alone remains one of the most beloved family films of the 1990s, largely due to Macaulay Culkin’s breakout performance as Kevin McCallister. While the first two films achieved massive success, the franchise struggled to maintain its charm in later installments.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Columbus said the franchise suffered due to what he described as “bad sequels.” He clarified that he did not intend to offend anyone involved but felt the quality noticeably dropped after the third film.

According to Columbus, Home Alone 3 marked the turning point for the series. While he acknowledged it as the strongest among the later entries, he still considered it part of a downward trajectory that damaged the franchise’s reputation.
The original films succeeded due to a balance of physical comedy, heart and relatable family dynamics. Columbus suggested that later installments failed to recapture this formula, instead relying on repetitive gags without emotional depth.
Macaulay Culkin, whose performance defined the franchise, echoed similar sentiments. Speaking to the same publication, he bluntly remarked that the later films lacked the original cast, saying, “They didn’t have us.”
The absence of Culkin and key actors such as Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern and Catherine O’Hara significantly altered the tone of the franchise. Audiences found it difficult to connect with new characters introduced in later films.
Despite the criticism, the original Home Alone films continue to enjoy enduring popularity, especially during the holiday season. They are widely regarded as classics that shaped a generation of family entertainment.
