Karachi Extortion Threats Push Builders Toward Shutdown

Real estate builders in Karachi warned of a business shutdown over Karachi extortion threats. Developers said criminal gangs are demanding protection money. They accused authorities of failing to stop rising harassment cases.

The Association of Builders and Developers raised concerns at a press conference. Members said extortion calls increased sharply in recent months. At least ten builders have officially reported serious threats.

Moreover, Abad leaders claimed gangs operate locally and from abroad. Callers allegedly used Iran- and UAE-based numbers. They demanded up to Rs50 million and threatened violence for refusal.

Builders said criminals openly share bank details and phone numbers. Despite multiple cases, alleged gang leaders remain free. As a result, fear continues to grip Karachi’s business community.

Abad warned it would halt operations after January 15 if conditions stay unchanged. Leaders urged strong state action to stop Karachi extortion. They said continued inaction could damage the city’s economy.
