The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Islamabad chapter on Thursday constituted an election committee to begin preparations for the upcoming local government polls in the federal capital. The move follows the party’s decision to contest the elections scheduled for February 15.

According to a notification issued by PTI Islamabad President Amir Mughal, the local government elections committee will be headed by Regional General Secretary Malik Amir Ali Awan. The chairman of the committee has also been authorised to invite non-members to meetings whenever required.

The committee has been tasked with drafting a joint election manifesto and planning a unified campaign across Islamabad. It will also supervise campaign activities to ensure consistency and coordination among party candidates.

In addition, the committee will oversee the formation and guidance of campaign teams at the district and union council levels. PTI aims to ensure the presence of its candidates in all union councils across the capital’s three constituencies.

The committee’s responsibilities also include coordination with constituency leadership, scrutiny of nomination papers, and their timely submission. A legal team will be set up to provide guidance on electoral laws and to address objections or legal challenges during the process.

Amir Mughal expressed concerns over amendments to the Local Government Act 2015, particularly the abolition of direct elections for chairman and vice chairman. He said the changes could encourage horse-trading and manipulation of the public mandate, but reaffirmed PTI’s resolve to contest the polls vigorously.

Scrutiny of nomination papers will take place from December 30 to January 3, 2026. Polling is scheduled for February 15, with results to be consolidated between February 16 and 19.
