Violent protests in Assam against Modi govt policies leave several dead

Published on: December 25, 2025 5:00 PM

Several people were killed and many injured in violent protests across Assam, India, over Modi government policies. Tribal communities clashed with non-local settlers over land occupation. Authorities imposed a curfew and restricted internet access to control the unrest.

Protests erupted in Karbi Anglong and Kheroni districts, where local tribes accused outsiders of illegally occupying land. The settlers’ presence threatens local resources and demographic balance. Residents demanded the immediate removal of non-locals from agricultural and commercial lands. Meanwhile, police increased security to prevent further clashes and maintain order.

The unrest has caused severe disruptions in daily life. Schools, businesses, and transport services were suspended in affected areas. Internet restrictions made communication difficult, while curfews limited movement. Government officials called for calm, urging tribal groups to resolve disputes peacefully. Local leaders expressed concern over rising tensions and the risk of wider violence.

Observers noted that Assam’s tribal population has long faced challenges from incoming settlers. Economic resources, farmland, and jobs are increasingly contested. Protests reflect deeper frustrations over land rights and government policies favoring non-local settlers. Activists warned that unresolved grievances could escalate if authorities fail to act promptly.

Authorities plan to review land laws and hold discussions with tribal leaders. Meanwhile, Assam remains tense as communities await government action. Observers call for swift intervention to prevent more deaths and restore peace.
