Punjab motorways closed amid intense fog

Intense fog engulfed various districts of Punjab resulted in poor visibility as the NDMA has issued an alert about intense fog prevailing in the region for three days.

The road authorities have closed several sections of the motorway.

Motorway M-2 has been closed from Lahore to Islamabad and M-3 from Lahore to Multan owing to foggy conditions, a Motorways spokesperson said.

M-4 section of motorway has also been closed from Faisalabad to Multan and M-V from Multan to Zahir Pir, while Lahore to Sialkot M-11 was also shut for traffic, spokesman said.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an alert regarding intense fog in South and Central Punjab for next three days.

A thick layer of fog is expected to engulf Lahore, Jhang, Multan, Khanewal, Mian Channu, Sahiwal, Okara, Pak Pattan, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Lodhran and Vehari districts.

Fog is also expected to engulf surroundings of Sukkur in upper Sindh with likely foggy conditions in night and morning in Islamabad, NDMA said.

Motorways Police has advised drivers to ensure use of fog lights in vehicles during travel in foggy conditions as restricted visibility feared to cause traffic accidents.

Weather in Lahore turns intense cold

Due to cold winds, the intensity of the cold increased in the city on Saturday, fog also settled in the city, and reduced visibility affected normal life.

The current temperature of the city was recorded at 8 degrees Celsius.

According to the Meteorological Department, the humidity ratio in the air was recorded at 95 per cent. Winds continue to blow at a speed of three kilometers per hour in the city.

According to the Meteorological Department, the sun and clouds will continue to alternate.

The air quality of the city has started improving, and the Air Quality Index was recorded at 108.

The Met department said, the weather in the city will remain cold, with no chance of rain.

On the other hand, snowfall in the upper areas of the country has increased the cold, snowfall in Malika-e-Kohsar has brought waves of tourists.

The mountains of Galiyat had also covered themselves with a white sheet, one-and-a-half to two feet of snow has fallen in the Lowari Tunnel, 28 inches of snowfall was recorded in Chitral and up to 2 feet in many areas of Astore, and the mountains of Chilas and Upper Dir had also been covered in white.

Snowfall closed roads in Battagram, that continued for the third day in Azad Kashmir’s Neelum Valley, tourist rush increased at the Flying Keel Chairlift, heavy snowfall closed roads to tourist destinations.

It is worth mentioning here that Muzaffarabad and its surroundings received drizzle, Balochistan also experienced a severe cold wave, Ziarat recorded a minimum temperature of minus four degrees, Islamabad and Rawalpindi received intermittent rain.

The mercury dropped to minus 15 in Grace Valley, while most districts of Balochistan also experienced cold weather. The minimum temperature in Quetta was minus 2 and in Kalat minus 4.

Rain and more snowfall in the mountains are likely in most districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while cold winds prevailed in Punjab.

Clouds covered the sky in Lahore, icy winds increased the intensity of the cold.
