5.8-magnitude earthquake shakes parts of Pakistan

Published on: January 9, 2026 12:10 PM

A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck parts of Pakistan early on Friday, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). The tremor occurred at 2am at a depth of 159km near the Tajikistan–Xinjiang border.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude of 5.3 at a depth of 140km, while the United States Geological Survey (USGS) noted that Pakistan, Tajikistan, China, and Afghanistan were affected by the quake. Tremors were reportedly felt in Islamabad and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage.

Pakistan is located at the convergence of three major tectonic plates — the Arabian, Euro-Asian, and Indian plates — which form five seismic zones in the country. The region is therefore prone to frequent earthquakes.

In recent months, several tremors have been recorded across Pakistan, including a 3.2-magnitude earthquake in Karachi in October 2025 and a 5.5-magnitude quake in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in September 2025.

Authorities have advised residents in affected areas to remain alert and follow safety protocols in case of aftershocks.
