Elon Musk’s SpaceX has activated free internet access via its Starlink satellite service for users in Iran, providing a crucial digital lifeline amid the country’s ongoing crackdown on anti-government protests.

According to Ahmad Ahmadian, executive director at the technology nonprofit Holistic Resilience, Starlink accounts in Iran that were previously inactive now have active connections, and their subscription fees have been waived as of Tuesday. The move comes as Iranian authorities continue to restrict internet access nationwide, making it difficult for protesters and ordinary citizens to communicate freely.
The development follows a recent phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, during which the two reportedly discussed Starlink access for Iran. Requests for comment from both SpaceX and the White House have not been addressed.

Over the past few weeks, Iran has imposed one of its largest-ever digital blackouts while violently suppressing protests, with human rights groups reporting more than 1,800 deaths, though the actual toll may be higher due to the communications shutdown. President Trump has publicly urged Iranians to continue resisting the regime and has indicated that all options, including U.S. support, remain on the table.
Starlink is not the only tool available to circumvent Iranian censorship. In the past, the U.S. government has funded virtual private networks (VPNs) and software designed to help Iranians access uncensored information online. However, funding for these initiatives was reduced last year as part of broader cuts to U.S. foreign assistance programs.
