Published on: January 15, 2026 1:25 PM

BAHAWALPUR: A suspect involved in the desecration of a young girl’s grave was killed by gunfire from his own accomplices during a police operation in Khairpur Tamewali tehsil on Wednesday, officials said. The incident occurred in Masoom locality, where Abdul Wahid, also known as Kala, and his three accomplices had been hiding to evade arrest.

Police said a team raided the ruins of Hamidabad before dawn. Upon seeing the officers, the suspects allegedly opened fire, prompting police to return fire. After the exchange, Wahid was found seriously injured, reportedly hit by bullets fired by his fleeing accomplices.

A rescue team from Rescue 1122 arrived at the scene and attempted to save Wahid, but he succumbed to his injuries before he could be moved to a hospital. During the crossfire, a bullet struck Head Constable Ali Raza, who remained unharmed thanks to a bullet-proof jacket.

Authorities registered a case against the three accomplices under FIR No. 9/26 and launched a search operation to apprehend them. The police said the motive behind Wahid’s grave desecration remains under investigation.

The suspect had allegedly dug up the grave of a young girl in Masoom locality and defiled the body. Police are now examining the circumstances that led to the crime and the identities of the fleeing accomplices, warning that they will be arrested soon.
