Two killed in Dera Bugti landmine blast

Published on: January 19, 2026 9:54 AM

Two men were killed in a landmine blast in the Dera Bugti district of Balochistan on Sunday, with authorities saying the victims were apparently attempting to plant the device underground when it detonated.

Police said the incident took place in the Lanjo Safari area of Sui tehsil. Security officials stated that the explosive device was being buried when it went off, killing both individuals on the spot. Their identities had not been confirmed until late in the evening.

A security official suggested that the mine was likely intended to target local residents. Police and security personnel rushed to the scene following the explosion and shifted the bodies to Sui Hospital. Investigations were underway to determine links between the deceased and any militant or criminal networks operating in the district.

In a separate incident, unidentified assailants carried out a grenade attack near Aftab Chowk in the Sakran neighbourhood of Hub district on Sunday night. According to police, the attackers, riding a motorcycle, hurled the grenade before fleeing. While no casualties were reported, the explosion caused widespread panic among residents in the area.

Authorities immediately cordoned off the neighbourhood and collected evidence as part of a wider probe into recent security incidents reported in the province.

Balochistan has witnessed a surge in low-intensity attacks and targeted bombings over recent months, often attributed to insurgent outfits operating in remote regions. According to the Global Terrorism Index, Pakistan ranked second in 2025, with fatalities from terrorist attacks rising by 45 per cent compared to the previous year.

Balochistan’s inspector general of police has pledged to bolster security infrastructure in 2026 through modern weapons procurement, enhanced planning and specialised training, with provincial authorities reiterating their commitment to improving public safety.
