JI cautions against hasty decision on Gaza peace board

Published on: January 20, 2026 12:11 PM

RAWALPINDI: Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) deputy emir Liaquat Baloch on Monday cautioned the federal government against making rushed decisions regarding Pakistan’s potential participation in the US-led Gaza Board of Peace. He emphasised that the country should not “blindly plunge” into the initiative without fully assessing its implications and the broader geopolitical consequences.

Speaking at a press conference at JI offices in Rawalpindi, Mr Baloch criticised the approach taken by the United States, describing it as aggressive and a threat to global peace. He reiterated JI’s support for Palestinian sovereignty, stating, “Palestine belongs to Palestinians, and we condemn the US’s approach.” He added that resolving issues in Palestine and Kashmir is key to establishing global peace.

JI Rawalpindi emir Syed Arif Shirazi, district general secretary Usman Akash, Naib Umra, and other party leaders attended the briefing. The leaders underscored that Pakistan must carefully weigh its diplomatic decisions in the region before joining any international initiative, including the Gaza Board of Peace.

Mr Baloch also addressed domestic issues, expressing sorrow over the Gul Plaza fire tragedy in Karachi. He called on federal and provincial authorities to compensate affected families and establish an impartial fact-finding commission to determine negligence.

Commenting on PTI’s planned protest on February 8, he stressed that it is the opposition’s constitutional right to demonstrate. He also criticised the Punjab Local Government Act, calling it a “black law” and condemning the imposition of an unauthorised local government system that, in his view, denies power to the people.
