Greenland in spotlight as Trump questions Denmark

Published on: January 20, 2026 5:45 PM

US President Donald Trump said the United States would discuss acquiring Greenland at this week’s Davos World Economic Forum. He cited security concerns, claiming Denmark cannot protect the territory. Trump described Denmark as “wonderful people” but stressed the island’s strategic importance requires US control.

Trump told reporters in Florida that Greenland must be secured properly and the United States is the only country capable of doing so. He emphasised that Danish leaders are competent but rarely visit or oversee Greenland directly. The president highlighted Greenland’s natural resources and strategic location as key reasons for potential talks.

The announcement comes ahead of Trump’s planned address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where global leaders will discuss security, trade, and climate issues. Analysts say Trump’s comments could strain US-Denmark relations and raise concerns in Europe about territorial disputes and Arctic security.

Trump did not provide a timeline for the discussions but made clear that the United States will explore all options. He repeated that Greenland’s protection is critical and the Danish government cannot meet the required standards alone. Observers note the remarks may signal a shift toward more assertive US Arctic policy.

Experts warn that any move on Greenland could trigger diplomatic friction and international scrutiny. Meanwhile, Trump’s statements have sparked media coverage worldwide, with policymakers closely watching responses from Denmark, NATO allies, and Arctic stakeholders. The discussion underscores Greenland’s growing importance in global geopolitics.
