GHQ case: Imran Khan barred from consultation

Published on: January 20, 2026 9:45 PM

Pakistan’s anti-terrorism court rejected lawyers’ request to meet PTI founder Imran Khan. The case concerns the May 9 GHQ attack. The judge ruled jail authorities control all meetings.

The hearing took place at the Rawalpindi Anti-Terrorism Court, presided over by Judge Ahmed Ali Shah. Lawyers sought permission to consult with Imran Khan for legal advice. Prosecutor Syed Zaheer Shah argued that Imran Khan is not formally arrested in this case. He is under jail authority custody, so meeting permissions fall outside court jurisdiction.

The judge agreed with the prosecution and dismissed the application. He emphasized that the court cannot intervene in jail officials’ decisions regarding detainee access. Lawyers expressed disappointment but noted they will pursue other legal channels to consult with Imran Khan.

The GHQ attack case remains under active investigation. Authorities continue to review security footage, witness testimonies, and procedural details, while Imran Khan remains in custody.

This decision reinforces the authority of jail officials over detainee meetings and underscores the legal complexities surrounding high-profile cases in Pakistan.
