Cold wave tightens grip across Pakistan

Published on: January 22, 2026 3:45 PM

Pakistan is facing a fresh spell of intense cold due to westerly winds. The Met Office warned of a sharp drop in temperatures nationwide. Snowfall is expected in upper regions, while rain will affect plains.

The Meteorological Department said westerly winds are impacting both plains and mountainous areas. Snow is likely in upper reaches, while rain may hit Islamabad and nearby regions. Authorities warned cold conditions will intensify further.

Meanwhile, rainfall is expected to reduce dense fog in plains. Improved visibility may help road users in affected areas. However, temperatures will continue to fall, with Islamabad possibly reaching freezing point.

In Balochistan, snowfall has been reported in Ziarat, Chaman, and nearby districts. Snowfall continued intermittently in Quetta, according to PDMA. Rescue teams and heavy machinery have been deployed for clearance.

Additionally, landslides disrupted highways in Muslim Bagh, prompting emergency operations. PDMA cancelled staff holidays and activated its control room. Authorities assured full preparedness to manage emergencies.
