Two IS-linked men put to death in Iran

Published on: January 24, 2026 6:15 PM

Iran executed two men linked to Islamic State (IS) for a 2023 bus bombing, the judiciary reported. The attack targeted a bus carrying pilgrims traveling from Tehran to Ilam province. The bombing killed a toddler and injured several others.

Mizan news agency said the two men were directly involved in planting the bomb. Authorities identified them as IS affiliates. The executions mark Iran’s latest action against those accused of terrorism-related crimes.

The incident occurred on a route near the western border with Iraq. Pilgrims were traveling when the explosive device detonated. Iranian officials described the attack as a serious threat to national security.

UN rights chief urged Iran to end “brutal repression” following the executions. Human rights advocates have long criticized Iran for the use of capital punishment. The case drew international attention due to the young victims involved.

The Iranian judiciary continues to pursue individuals accused of terrorism. Officials say such measures are part of efforts to prevent future attacks. The executions follow Iran’s strict approach to anti-terrorism enforcement.
