Balochistan shivers as temperatures hit minus 12

Published on: January 24, 2026 10:00 PM

Quetta: Balochistan faced severe cold as temperatures plunged to minus 12°C, freezing water supplies and disrupting daily life. Highways were blocked, and tourist travel was restricted across northern and border regions. Sub-zero conditions have created widespread difficulties for residents.

Despite snowfall stopping in many areas, icy Siberian winds continue to grip the province. Cities including Quetta, Kalat, Chaman, and Ziarat saw household water pipelines freeze, causing drinking water shortages. Ponds, roads, and open areas turned into ice, affecting mobility and local activities.

Several key highways, including the Quetta–Ziarat route, remain snow-covered. The N-50 Zhob Highway is closed at multiple points. Authorities imposed a temporary ban on tourist travel to Ziarat and are urging caution in all affected regions.

Daily life has been badly affected in Chaman, Qila Abdullah, Ziarat, Pishin, and Toba Achakzai. Residents face difficulties with transport, water access, and heating. Road clearance operations are ongoing using salt and heavy machinery to reopen key routes.

Officials warned that the cold wave may continue in upper regions and advised residents to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and take precautions against frostbite and hypothermia. Emergency services remain on alert to assist those in need.
