King Charles faces pressure over possible US visit

Published on: January 26, 2026 9:06 PM

King Charles is reportedly under increasing pressure as calls grow for postponing a planned official visit to the United States amid ongoing political unrest and public debate. Reports suggest the visit, accompanied by Queen Camilla, is aimed at strengthening UK-US diplomatic relations.

While Buckingham Palace has not confirmed the trip, speculation has intensified following controversial US plans for Greenland, prompting some Britons to urge the monarchy to reconsider or cancel the state visit. The public debate highlights growing tensions over international engagement during sensitive political moments.

Royal expert Jennie Bond explained that the King does not have ultimate authority over foreign tours, stressing that decisions about state visits are guided by the Prime Minister and the UK government. The monarch acts largely on governmental advice when planning diplomatic trips abroad.

Bond also noted that King Charles’ diplomatic skills are highly regarded and can showcase the monarchy’s “soft power” during critical times. She emphasized that careful engagement abroad can enhance the UK’s image without directly influencing government policy decisions.

Despite public pressure, Bond believes the UK government is unlikely to cancel the trip, even though formal plans have not been officially announced. Any visit by the King and Queen could also pave the way for Prince William’s participation in international events like the World Cup.

Observers say the situation illustrates the delicate balance between public opinion, political considerations, and royal protocol. Experts note that the monarchy’s international engagements are often symbolic, requiring careful coordination with elected officials to maintain diplomatic decorum.
