Iran lawyers warn of looming mass executions

Published on: February 6, 2026 7:15 PM

Iran is preparing mass executions after recent talks with the United States ended, lawyers have warned. They say arrests have surged nationwide. Many detainees face death penalty charges without fair legal process.

In recent weeks, security forces have raided protesters’ homes across Iran. According to lawyers, thousands were detained for joining nationwide protests. Many arrests happened without warrants or proper court procedures.

Moreover, prosecutors have filed severe charges at early investigation stages. These include moharebeh, or waging war against God, which carries the death penalty. Lawyers say evidence is often missing or weak in these cases.

One defence lawyer from Mazandaran described the repression as unprecedented in 47 years. He said judges are increasingly demanding executions. He also warned that authorities may act once international pressure eases.

Meanwhile, reports suggest some detainees were secretly executed in several cities. Lawyers claim bodies were moved to morgues, while officials blamed street clashes. As a result, fears are growing of a new phase of systematic repression.
