US proposes Russia-Ukraine war end by summer

Published on: February 7, 2026 7:30 PM

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the US is proposing that Russia and Ukraine end the war by the beginning of this summer. The US aims to pressure both sides to follow this timeline. Zelenskyy added that internal US issues, including midterm elections, may affect the schedule.

The US has also proposed hosting a meeting between Russian and Ukrainian negotiating teams for the first time. Zelenskyy said this meeting will likely take place in Miami within a week. The goal is to restart discussions and push for conflict resolution.

Kyiv has confirmed its support for US-led initiatives to halt energy strikes, while Moscow has yet to respond. The proposal follows recent two-day negotiations in Abu Dhabi on February 4-5, which included the first prisoner exchange in five months.

Earlier talks in Abu Dhabi on January 23-24 laid the groundwork for the current negotiations. Zelenskyy emphasized that the US initiative could create momentum to reach a ceasefire and eventually a lasting peace agreement. Both sides remain cautious but open to dialogue.

The US aims to use diplomatic pressure and international coordination to bring Russia and Ukraine to the table. Analysts say the success of this plan depends on mutual concessions and enforcement of agreed terms. Regional and global stability hinges on the outcome of these talks.
