Karachi and Sindh prepare for rain as Westerly system arrives

Published on: March 17, 2026 4:08 PM

Residents of Karachi and several other districts of Sindh are expected to experience a spell of rain and thunderstorms as a new weather system approaches the region. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast changing weather conditions beginning Tuesday as a fresh westerly wave enters the western parts of the country.

According to the meteorological advisory, the incoming system could trigger rain accompanied by thunderstorms, gusty winds, and isolated hailstorms in various parts of Sindh. Weather officials said the developing pattern may bring intermittent rainfall across the province while temperatures are likely to drop slightly during the wet spell.

Several districts including Jamshoro, Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Umerkot, Tharparkar, and Mirpurkhas are expected to receive rainfall as the system spreads across the region. Other areas such as Sanghar, Matiari, and Tando Allah Yar may also experience similar weather conditions.

Meanwhile, the northern districts of the province are also likely to witness thunderstorms with strong winds. The weather department expects rainfall in Larkana, Shikarpur, Jacobabad, Kashmore, Ghotki, and Sukkur between March 18 and 19, with occasional breaks between rain spells.

Weather experts noted that the approaching system may produce varying rainfall intensity across the affected areas. While some districts could receive moderate showers, others may only see brief thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds and cloudy conditions during the forecast period.

Authorities have also advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorms because lightning strikes may occur at isolated locations. The weather department urged the public to take necessary safety precautions, particularly during outdoor activities, as the unstable weather system moves across Sindh.
