Iran confirms death of senior security adviser Ali Larijani

Published on: March 18, 2026 9:45 AM

Tehran — Iran has confirmed the death of senior security adviser Ali Larijani, a prominent conservative figure and key member of the country’s political establishment.

Larijani served as an adviser on national security to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and was regarded as one of the most influential policymakers in the country. His death marks a significant loss for Iran’s leadership at a time of heightened regional tensions.

A veteran politician, Larijani held the position of Speaker of the Iranian Parliament from 2008 to 2020, where he played a central role in shaping legislative and strategic decisions. He was widely seen as a trusted ally of Khamenei and maintained considerable influence within Iran’s conservative circles.

Iranian officials confirmed that Ali Larijani, who had been a fixture of Iran’s regime for decades, was killed by an Israeli airstrike that also killed another top security official.

Larijani also served as Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator, representing the country in sensitive talks with European powers over its nuclear programme. During his tenure, he was known for advocating a balanced diplomatic approach, seeking to manage relations with both regional actors and Western countries.

His involvement in nuclear diplomacy was considered crucial, particularly during periods of intense international scrutiny and negotiations over Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Analysts say his experience and pragmatic stance helped navigate complex geopolitical challenges.

Beyond politics, Larijani had a strong academic background. He earned his education from Sharif University of Technology and held a PhD in philosophy, reflecting a blend of intellectual and political engagement throughout his career.

Iranian officials have paid tribute to Larijani, describing him as a dedicated statesman who contributed significantly to national policy and strategic planning. His legacy is expected to have a lasting impact on Iran’s political and diplomatic landscape.

Further details regarding the circumstances of his death have not yet been disclosed.
