Internet reacts to live-action Maui in Disney’s Moana

Published on: March 24, 2026 1:02 PM

Disney's live-action 'Moana' faces instant internet backlash: Here's why

The internet is buzzing after the first look at the live-action Moana introduced fans to Maui, played by Dwayne Johnson. While Disney anticipated excitement, the reaction has been a mix of memes, side-eyes, and outright skepticism.

The initial image showcased Maui’s iconic tattoos, flowing hair, and larger-than-life build, sparking immediate debate online. Many users focused on the wig, while others questioned whether the exaggerated animated proportions of the demigod could translate successfully into live action. Memes and jokes about the character quickly spread across social media platforms, reflecting fans’ mixed feelings.

Disney’s live-action remake strategy has often drawn similar reactions. Some projects have been box office hits, while others face backlash over whether these adaptations are necessary. Nevertheless, Disney is moving full steam ahead with the film.

The remake pairs Johnson with newcomer Catherine Laga’aia as Moana and is directed by Thomas Kali. Production wrapped in 2024, with filming taking place in Hawaii and Atlanta. Johnson, who is also producing, has described the project as deeply personal, connecting it to his Polynesian heritage.

The story follows familiar beats from the original animated feature: a young navigator sets out on a journey to save her people, teaming up with Maui, a shape-shifting demigod whose antics range from heroic to chaotic.

Whether audiences will embrace this live-action iteration or turn it into an ongoing meme series remains to be seen. For now, one thing is clear: Maui has “entered the chat,” and the internet is not holding back its opinions.
