Trump rejects Iran’s attempt to blackmail US over Hormuz

Published on: April 18, 2026 7:54 PM

US President Donald Trump has said Iran cannot “blackmail” the United States by threatening to close the Strait of Hormuz again. He made the remarks during an interaction with reporters at the Oval Office, amid ongoing tensions with Tehran.

Trump said negotiations with Iran are currently progressing well but warned against any attempts to pressure Washington. He stated that the United States would not accept coercion over strategic maritime routes.

He also referred to past US military actions against Iranian leadership, including the killing of Qassem Soleimani. Trump said Soleimani was responsible for attacks that harmed American soldiers. He added that further updates on Iran would be announced later in the day.

The US president also commented on broader foreign policy issues, criticizing Spain over defense spending and NATO contributions. He said the United States does not require permission from other countries to carry out its operations.

Separately, Trump highlighted domestic policy reforms, including reductions in drug prices and efforts to curb narcotics trafficking. His comments came alongside escalating geopolitical tensions involving Iran and maritime security in the Gulf region.
