Iran says US cannot dictate policy to nations

Published on: April 28, 2026 5:00 PM

Iran has said the United States is no longer in a position to dictate policy to other nations. The statement comes as Washington considers a proposal from Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The issue is significant as the waterway remains central to global energy flows and ongoing regional tensions.

Iranian defence ministry spokesman Reza Talaei-Nik made the remarks on Tuesday. He said the US must abandon what he called illegal and irrational demands. His comments were broadcast by Iranian state media. They reflect continued friction despite a ceasefire between Iran, the US, and Israel.

Moreover, the Strait of Hormuz has become a key bargaining point in negotiations. Iran had effectively restricted access to the waterway earlier in the conflict. That move disrupted global energy markets and raised concerns over oil and gas supplies. Talks on a lasting settlement remain inconclusive.

Additionally, reports suggest Washington is reviewing a proposal linked to reopening the strait. The proposal is part of broader efforts to stabilize the situation while maintaining negotiations. However, no agreement has yet been reached between the parties. Diplomatic efforts remain ongoing amid uncertainty.

Finally, Iran reiterated its willingness to deepen defence cooperation with select countries. Talaei-Nik said Tehran is ready to share military capabilities with friendly states, including members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. The statement came ahead of a defence ministers’ meeting in the bloc. It signals Iran’s continued focus on alternative international partnerships.
