Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia is advancing in Ukraine and will always stand on the side of victory and truth. He made the remarks during a major Victory Day address on May 9 in Moscow. The speech took place at Red Square during ceremonies marking the 81st anniversary of the Soviet victory in World War II.

Putin congratulated Russian citizens and armed forces during the national celebrations. He described Victory Day as a sacred and most important national holiday for Russia. He said the nation will always honor the sacrifices of those who fought in what Russia calls the Great Patriotic War.

The Russian president said Soviet forces played a decisive role in defeating Nazi Germany. He claimed they saved the world from “absolute evil” and restored sovereignty to nations occupied during the war. Putin also referred to June 22, 1941, as one of the darkest days in Russian history.

He paid tribute to soldiers and civilians who died during World War II. Putin also honored victims of the siege of Leningrad and others who sacrificed their lives for the country. He said Russia will never forget the memory and contributions of these generations.
