Gaza flotilla activists set for deportation

Published on: May 9, 2026 10:15 PM

Two activists detained after Israel intercepted a Gaza-bound aid flotilla are expected to be released and deported in the coming days. The decision follows their detention last month when Israeli forces stopped the vessel in international waters. Their lawyers confirmed that immigration authorities will process their removal.

The activists include Spanish national Saif Abu Keshek and Brazilian Thiago Ávila. Both were arrested on April 29 and brought to Israel for questioning. They were part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, which aimed to deliver aid to Gaza and challenge the blockade.

Israeli authorities had accused the activists of suspected links to a terrorist organization and illegal activity. Both individuals denied the allegations. Their home countries, Spain and Brazil, also said the detention was unlawful and called for their release.

A court in Israel had previously ordered them to remain in custody until May 10. However, lawyers said they were informed they would be transferred to immigration authorities ahead of deportation. Human rights group Adalah said it is closely monitoring the process to ensure compliance.

The incident comes amid ongoing tensions surrounding Gaza and aid delivery restrictions. Humanitarian organizations continue to report delays in aid reaching the enclave, where conditions remain severe following months of conflict.
