IHC seeks response from Law, Overseas Ministries on NIRC Chairman’s non-appointment

Published on: May 12, 2026 1:00 AM

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday sought a response from the Ministry of Law and the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis by May 13 regarding a petition challenging the non-appointment of the Chairman and a Member of the National Industrial Relations Commission (NIRC).

A single bench of Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir heard the petition filed by lawyer Umer Baloch, with Advocate Shoaib Shaheen appearing on behalf of the petitioner.

Shoaib Shaheen informed the court that after the resignation of former Chairman Justice (retired) Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui, a permanent chairman has yet to be appointed. He further stated that following the chairman’s departure, a member of the commission has also retired, leaving the NIRC currently non-functional.

The court inquired whether the petitioner was aware of the reasons behind the delay in appointments. The counsel responded that he had no information regarding what steps the government was taking on this matter.

The court issued notices to both the Ministry of Law and the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis, directing them to submit their responses by May 13. The bench subsequently adjourned the hearing.
