Chinese President Xi Jinping called for stronger cooperation between China and the United States during high-level talks with US President Donald Trump in Beijing, saying the two global powers should act as partners rather than rivals.
President Trump is currently on a two-day official visit to China, where he was formally welcomed by Xi at the Great Hall of the People. The two leaders shook hands before holding delegation-level talks with senior officials from both sides.

During the meeting, Xi said diplomacy and dialogue remain the only effective solutions to global crises, stressing that China and the US must maintain mutual respect and peaceful coexistence despite their differences.
Welcoming the US delegation, Xi described China and the United States as two major powers carrying a shared responsibility for global peace, economic growth and international stability.

He said the world is closely observing the Beijing talks at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty, including tensions linked to Iran and challenges facing global supply chains.
Xi said rapid international changes are reshaping the global order in ways not seen for decades, making cooperation between major nations more important than ever.
“The common interests between China and the United States outweigh our differences,” Xi said, adding that stable bilateral relations benefit both countries and the wider international community. He emphasised that cooperation would bring mutual gains, while confrontation would only cause losses.
Xi also raised the Taiwan issue, calling it the most sensitive matter in China-US relations. He warned that mishandling Taiwan could increase tensions between Washington and Beijing. In his opening remarks, Trump described it as an honour to meet Xi and referred to him as a friend.
The US president said he had brought some of the world’s top business leaders on the trip, highlighting trade and economic cooperation as the main focus of the summit.

Trump said his relationship with Xi has remained strong over the years and expressed confidence that China and the US would maintain productive ties for decades.
He added that both leaders have historically resolved challenges through direct communication. Trump arrived in Beijing a day earlier for the closely watched diplomatic visit.
