The controversy emerged after a viral court appearance video in which the accused allegedly mentioned the name “Raja Pervez,” though the audio was partially obscured by police presence. In another clip circulating online, the suspect’s lawyer reportedly claimed that she was being pressured to name certain political figures.

Addressing the National Assembly, Ashraf said he was surprised by the allegation and initially believed the reference might be to another individual with a similar name. He noted that social media users quickly amplified the clip, leading to widespread discussion and speculation.
He emphasized that neither his political career as a former prime minister nor his tenure as National Assembly speaker had involved any wrongdoing, stating, “I have led a spotless life.” He added that he was ready to cooperate fully with any inquiry to clear his name.
The matter was also raised in the assembly, where Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar expressed solidarity with Ashraf, calling the allegations baseless and stating that the entire house stood with him. He suggested that the claim could be an attempt to divert attention from the ongoing investigation into the accused.
Tarar also criticized sections of the media for amplifying unverified claims and said the government would examine the issue through relevant institutions, including regulatory bodies.

The National Assembly speaker also called for stronger measures against drug trafficking and urged lawmakers to consider stricter legislation to address rising substance abuse concerns in educational institutions.
Authorities have not confirmed any formal investigation linking Ashraf to the case, while the inquiry into the alleged drug network continues.
