US iran ceasefire draft signals possible breakthrough soon

Published on: May 22, 2026 6:45 PM

A potential US-Iran agreement draft is moving toward finalisation, with reports suggesting an announcement could come within hours as diplomatic efforts intensify. The proposed deal, mediated with involvement from Pakistan, outlines a comprehensive ceasefire across land, sea and air operations, aiming to reduce escalating regional tensions.

According to reported details, the agreement includes an immediate halt to all military actions along with a mutual commitment to stop targeting military, civilian and economic infrastructure. Moreover, both sides would agree to end media hostilities and respect sovereignty, territorial integrity and non-interference in internal affairs.

The draft further guarantees freedom of navigation in key waterways, including the Arabian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman, which are critical global energy routes. In addition, a joint monitoring mechanism would be established to oversee implementation and resolve disputes during the transition period.

Marco Rubio stated that negotiations showed “some good signs,” although he cautioned against premature optimism as key issues remain unresolved. Furthermore, differences over uranium enrichment and control of the Strait of Hormuz continue to create significant obstacles in finalising the agreement.

Meanwhile, diplomatic sources indicated that gradual lifting of US sanctions has been proposed in exchange for Iranian compliance with the agreement’s conditions. In addition, the draft reaffirms adherence to international law and the United Nations Charter while setting a framework for immediate enforcement once both sides formally approve the deal.

At the same time, Pakistan continues its mediation efforts as Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi holds discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to narrow remaining gaps. Ultimately, negotiators are working to resolve sensitive issues and establish a roadmap that could stabilise relations and prevent further escalation between the two countries.
