4.7 magnitude earthquake shakes northern Pakistan

Published on: May 26, 2026 8:47 PM

Islamabad and several cities across Punjab experienced earthquake tremors on Tuesday, causing panic among residents. The tremors were also felt in Lahore, Gujranwala, Mandi Bahauddin, Jhelum, Okara, and Sheikhupura. Authorities said no casualties or property damage were immediately reported following the earthquake.

According to the seismic monitoring centre, the earthquake measured 4.7 in magnitude. Officials said the quake originated at a depth of 18 kilometres beneath the surface. The relatively shallow depth allowed tremors to be felt across several densely populated areas of Punjab and the federal capital region.

Residents in multiple cities rushed out of homes and buildings after feeling the tremors. Eyewitnesses said many people recited prayers and gathered in open spaces as a precautionary measure. The sudden shaking created fear among citizens, especially in high-rise residential and commercial buildings.

Emergency authorities and local administrations remained on alert following the earthquake. Initial assessments indicated no major structural damage in the affected areas. Rescue officials advised residents to remain cautious and follow safety guidelines in case of possible aftershocks.

Pakistan frequently experiences earthquakes due to its location near active tectonic fault lines. Seismologists warn that moderate tremors are common in the region because of ongoing geological activity. Authorities continue monitoring the situation while urging citizens to avoid panic.
