CDF Munir’s efforts position Pakistan as trusted mediator: reports

Published on: May 27, 2026 9:47 AM

The mediation efforts led by Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir have earned Pakistan global acclaim for its quiet yet effective role in de-escalating US-Iran tensions, establishing the country as a reliable bridge for ceasefire and peace efforts in the Middle East.

Pakistan’s unique geographical location, strong military and intelligence credentials, and balanced relations with major powers including the US, Iran, China, Gulf states, and Turkiye have enabled it to play this pivotal role. Unlike other regional actors, Islamabad adopted a low-profile, results-oriented approach focused on backchannel diplomacy rather than publicity.

The international media reports including TRT and CBS have appreciated Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir who has been at the forefront of these efforts whose pragmatic, realistic, and outcome-driven diplomatic style that has been widely credited with maintaining communication channels between Washington and Tehran even during the most challenging periods.

Reports highlight his visits to Tehran for high-level engagements and coordination with US officials, contributing significantly to ceasefire arrangements.

Pakistan’s military leadership under Field Marshal Munir has also strengthened the country’s regional standing through initiatives like the Pakistan-Saudi defense pact and a firm stance against terrorism on its western borders. Counter-terrorism is increasingly seen as a prerequisite for credible regional mediation and economic integration.

The reports have also highlighted Pakistan’s crucial mediation role in US-Iran talks held in Islamabad, noting that as other traditional mediators faced constraints, Pakistan was ideally positioned due to its ties with both sides.

The media reports emphasized Field Marshal Munir’s credibility as a mediator trusted by the US and his instrumental involvement alongside Pakistani diplomatic channels in facilitating talks and a fragile two-week ceasefire.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly lauded Pakistan’s efforts, frequently referring to Field Marshal Asim Munir as his “favourite Field Marshal” and crediting him and Pakistani leadership for helping secure the ceasefire.

Trump publicly acknowledged conversations with Pakistan’s leadership in announcing the truce, describing Pakistan’s contribution as instrumental in averting wider conflict.

Following the ceasefire agreement, numerous world leaders and international bodies expressed gratitude to Pakistan. UN Secretary-General António Guterres, EU leaders, along with officials from Saudi Arabia, China, Australia, the UK, and others, praised Islamabad’s mediation for delivering much-needed de-escalation and urged sustained efforts toward lasting peace.
