Netanyahu vows Lebanon operations will continue

Published on: June 2, 2026 4:00 AM

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said military operations in southern Lebanon will continue according to plan despite reports of a ceasefire understanding. The statement matters because it signals ongoing regional tensions and uncertainty over de-escalation efforts. The development affects Israel, Hezbollah, Lebanon, and broader Middle East stability.

In a statement posted on social media, Netanyahu said he had clearly informed US President Donald Trump of Israel’s position. He warned that Israel would target what it described as terrorist sites in Beirut if Hezbollah continued attacks on Israeli cities and civilians. He emphasized that Israel’s policy regarding Hezbollah had not changed.

Furthermore, Netanyahu said Israeli forces would continue carrying out planned operations in southern Lebanon. His remarks appeared to contrast with Trump’s earlier announcement suggesting progress toward a ceasefire. The Israeli leader reiterated that military action would remain an option if security threats persisted.

Earlier, Trump said he had spoken with Netanyahu and discussed efforts to reduce tensions in the region. He claimed no troops would be sent toward Beirut and that forces already moving in that direction had been recalled. Trump also stated that contacts through senior representatives had resulted in a ceasefire understanding with Hezbollah.

Meanwhile, regional tensions remain high following reports that Iran suspended message exchanges with the United States. Trump said Washington had not been formally informed of such a decision. The conflicting statements underscore continuing uncertainty over diplomatic efforts and the prospects for lasting calm along the Israel-Lebanon border.
