Aleema demands free elections, independent courts

Published on: June 2, 2026 9:18 PM

Aleema Khan said the only acceptable political deal would restore judicial independence and ensure free and fair elections. Her remarks matter because they outline the PTI leadership’s stated political demands. The comments affect ongoing political discussions, party supporters, and Pakistan’s broader democratic landscape.

Speaking outside Adiala Jail, Aleema said authorities again denied her a meeting with her brother, former prime minister Imran Khan. She described access to him as a constitutional right and pledged to continue visiting the prison. She also said PTI leaders and family members would keep advocating for an independent judiciary and a free media.

Addressing reports of a meeting between the PTI founder and a former military chief, Aleema dismissed the claims. She called the rumours politically motivated and said no such meeting had taken place. She also referred to reports of discussions between PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. According to her, assurances regarding access to Imran Khan were given but were not fulfilled.

Furthermore, Aleema stressed that any political consultations conducted on behalf of the party should be transparent. She argued that proper medical treatment and care for Imran Khan should remain a priority. Commenting on developments in Gilgit-Baltistan, she criticised alleged electoral irregularities and restrictions on political activity. She maintained that political pressure would eventually encourage dialogue among stakeholders.

Meanwhile, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi said the party’s immediate demand was shifting Imran Khan to Shifa International Hospital for treatment. He rejected claims regarding a forward bloc against his government and urged attention on the upcoming federal budget. Afridi said the KP government had prepared what he described as a strong provincial budget, while warning that federal economic measures could affect citizens across the country.
