Iranian authorities have begun preparations for the burial of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, officials announced on Monday. The plans matter because they will shape national mourning ceremonies and public gatherings. Millions of Iranians, state institutions, and religious communities are expected to take part in the events.
According to Iranian media, Tehran Deputy Mayor for Social and Cultural Affairs Mohammad Amin Tavakoli Zadeh revealed new details about the funeral arrangements. He said authorities will organize three days of public mourning ceremonies before the burial. During this period, citizens will have the opportunity to pay tribute to the late leader.

Officials said funeral prayers will be offered after the public ceremonies conclude. A formal procession will then begin in Tehran. Tavakoli Zadeh stated that the procession could continue for at least 24 hours. Authorities are preparing for what could become one of the largest public gatherings in Iran’s modern history.
Furthermore, ceremonies will continue in the religious centers of Qom and Mashhad. Tavakoli Zadeh said Khamenei’s burial is expected near the shrine of Imam Reza in Mashhad. He added that the location aligns with the late leader’s reported wishes. Officials believe the extended events will attract participants from across the country.

Iranian authorities estimate that between 15 and 20 million people could attend the ceremonies. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps will oversee overall security and coordination efforts. Meanwhile, municipal agencies and other state institutions will support logistics and public services. Khamenei was reported killed during early American and Israeli strikes at the start of the Iran war.
