Protests erupt over delayed gilgit baltistan election results amid tensions

Published on: June 8, 2026 8:20 PM

Tensions escalated in several parts of Gilgit-Baltistan as supporters of independent candidates staged protests against delayed election results and alleged irregularities during the ongoing vote counting process across multiple constituencies.

According to unofficial and unconfirmed results, outcomes have been announced in 15 of 24 general seats, while the Pakistan Peoples Party has emerged as the leading political party so far in the regional assembly race.

Meanwhile, the counting process continues for remaining constituencies, as election authorities work to complete consolidation of results amid growing political pressure and public scrutiny over transparency and delays.

Furthermore, protests intensified in Diamer and Astore where demonstrators gathered outside district returning officer offices, demanding immediate release of results and questioning the fairness of the electoral process.

In addition, police used crowd control measures in some areas after supporters surrounded election offices, while authorities continued counting votes and rejected claims of systematic irregularities.

Finally, with several seats still undecided, political parties, independent candidates, and voters remain focused on final results as officials maintain that the counting process will conclude soon under established electoral procedures.
