The federal government has introduced a major relief package for the health sector in the new budget. The announcement was made by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb during his budget speech in the National Assembly. The package aims to improve access to affordable healthcare services across the country. It also focuses on reducing treatment costs for critical diseases.
The finance minister said the government is committed to providing quality and affordable medical facilities to the public. He added that efforts are underway to promote local production of medicines. Moreover, he stressed that equitable healthcare delivery remains a key government priority. Therefore, policy measures are being introduced to support the sector.
Under the new proposals, customs duty on more than 100 types of raw materials used in medicine production will be abolished. These materials are mainly used in the manufacturing of cancer and other life-saving drugs. In addition, the move is expected to reduce production costs for pharmaceutical companies. Consequently, medicine prices may decrease in the market.
Officials said the initiative is part of the National Tariff Policy 2025–30. The policy is designed to encourage local manufacturing and reduce dependence on imports. Furthermore, it aims to strengthen the pharmaceutical industry. As a result, patients are expected to benefit from improved affordability.
Overall, the government said the package will improve healthcare access and support domestic production. The reforms are expected to ease the financial burden on patients, especially those suffering from serious illnesses. Therefore, the health sector is likely to see long-term structural benefits.
